A 284-PAGE document which is set to shape the future of the Barrow borough for the next 15 years, will be debated by council members today.

For the past four years, Barrow Borough Council have been putting together their Local Plan which sets out the blueprint for development, infrastructure and housing needs from 2016 to 2031.

The Plan includes proposals to build 38 new housing sites across the borough in the next 16 years, which is equivalent to 1,990 new houses.

In the last 10 years, the council have adopted a 'brownfield first' approach to housing land with more than 90% of housing development in the borough in the last 10 years taking place on previously developed sites.

However, according to the Local Plan for the next 15 years, 79% of planned housing will be built on greenfield sites.

These include plans to build a new batch of houses in Croslands Park in Barrow as well as on land at Greenhills Farm in Dalton.

As well as houses, the council will also debate whether or not to turn four brownfield sites in Barrow into a mix of housing, heritage, leisure and open space complexes.

These include land at Channelside, a former gold driving range in Walney Road, Salthouse Mills and a former ironworks in Phoenix Road.

Other plans set to go under scrutiny include plans to improve Barrow and Dalton town centre.

Members of the public were invited to air their views and suggestions to improve the Barrow borough in a series of consultation events last year.
