AN arsonist who caused substantial damage to a Barrow cricket club and two vehicles has appeared in court.

Harvey Chapman, 24, appeared at Furness Magistrates' on September 18 where he pleaded guilty to three charges of arson without lawful excuse, and possession of cannabis.

Chapman, who gave his address as the Dova Unit at Furness General Hospital, was spotted by witnesses on September 15 who say they saw him dragging a smoking bin across the grass at Barrow Cricket Club, before leaving it next to an 'orange cylinder' which they feared would explode.

The defendant admitted starting a blaze which destroyed the club's score board and shed by pouring petrol over some lawn mowers.

Chapman also set fire to a Transit van, which caused significant damage to a grey Audi parked beside it in Abbots Vale, Barrow.

He was arrested after being spotted walking along Roose Road by officers.

The case was committed to Preston Crown Court to be heard on October 20.

Chapman was remanded in custody.
