AN adventure-loving shipyard worker has endured a gruelling 105-mile trek across the Scottish Highlands to raise cash for charitable causes close to his heart.

Patrick Robinson, 41, from Barrow tackled the Rat Race Coast to Coast 2016 for the Rosemere Cancer Foundation and Ulverston's St Mary's Hospice.

So far, Mr Robinson has raised around £1,500, but his JustGiving page will remain open until the end of this month.

He said: "We lost a family member to cancer and we are always trying to find ways to raise money, and have been doing this for about the past nine years.

"Originally, this coast to coast was just for fun and then I thought I might as well do it for charity.

"I wanted to raise £500 but it just snowballed from there when people heard I was doing it and I am absolutely amazed by their generosity."

Competing alongside brother Tyler Gibson, Mr Robinson started his journey on Scotland's east coast.

The pair had to run for seven miles, then cycle for 48 miles near Loch Ness before finishing day one with a mile-and-half kayak journey at Fort Augustus.

The brothers then camped overnight before tackling an early morning 21-mile off-road bike ride followed by a 13-mile road ride and then a half marathon over Ben Nevis, finishing at Glencoe.

The 41-year-old added: "I enjoyed the half marathon and did this in three-and-a-quarter hours.

"It was definitely an adventure and I have been training since December for this, but the first day was horrific.

"The cycling was awful and weather was bad and we just had to stare at the handlebars the whole way - it was so demoralising.

"I was definitely ready for a pint afterwards."

The yard worker was one of around 1,000 athletes taking part and completed the route in 12 hours and seven minutes, finishing 38th in his category.

Mr Robinson added: "I always say 'no more' but end up taking part in more.

"I can't thank people enough for their support and amazing generosity."
