SOUTH LAKELAND

David Walker, Vote Leave and Ukip referendum agent from Rydal, said: "It's very interesting that in a Parliamentary area that is clearly strongly Lib Dem that the vote is actually so close.

"The fact it's so close here means nationally it gives us hope that we will be returning sovereignty, freedom and democracy to Britain.

"If it's close here then nationally we could be winning."

Mr Walker recorded a sample vote from the Broughton ward showing an exact 161-161 split.

BARROW is still awaiting verification as counters are still working their way through the postal votes.

Leader of the council, David Pidduck, thinks the borough will vote to leave but remains hopeful for the country as a whole.

He said: "It's looking about 2-1 to leave here but I think as a country will remain.

BARROW and Kendal town halls have fallen silent as people begin the count for the EU Referendum.

People across the country have been divided for months over whether or not Britain should leave the European Union but in just a few short hours we will find out how the people of South Cumbria have voted.

The turnout is expected to be very high as reports of polling stations in the Barrow area reveal as many as 80 per cent on the population come out to have their say.

Turnout also high in South Lakeland

Scores of counters are busily making their way through the slips as they first work to find out the turnout for the vote.

Once that is revealed, they will begin the count again to find out where Cumbria Barrow decided to stay or leave.

As we head towards the final result, political leaders are unsure about what the future will hold for their town and country.

Nigel Cecil, vice-chairman of the UKip party in Barrow, is hopeful for a "leave" result.

He said: "We're feeling confident because this town represents the working people but the Labour party has sold them out and UKip are here to fill that hole.

"This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and it's important to all of us.

"We have to be confident and we believe in the people of this borough."

Anne Burns, vice-chairwoman of the Labour Party in Barrow, said Mr Cecil's views were unfair.

She said: "I don't think Labour has sold Barrow down the river.

"It has been a horrendous campaign and they have used every dirty trick in the book.

"People have had their say but without looking at the information that's there.

"Being in the EU is better for workers' rights, better for jobs and prosperity and if we vote to leave we're jumping into the unknown."

Cllr Burns is strongly in favour or remaining in the EU but suspects that people of Barrow have voted to leave.

Leader of the council, David Pidduck, is unsure of the result but is pleased by the high turnout.

He said: "It's looking like a high turnout but whether that's because people want to remain or exit I'm not quite sure at the moment.

"I think the highest election turnout we've had was around 52 per cent but we've passed that."
