A TALENTED young singer from Barrow has been given the privilege of singing in front of 80,000 people after bagging a place to perform in the rugby league Challenge Cup Fans' Choir at Wembley stadium on Saturday.

Callum Woodall, 12, of Kent Street, Barrow has been selected to sing Abide With Me as part of a 32-strong choir prior to tomorrow's curtain raiser which sees Hull FC take on Warrington Wolves.

The rugby fanatic, who works at Barrow Raiders as a ball boy, will represent the club by donning his shirt while singing the well-known sporting hymn.

Callum is one of the youngest members of the ensemble but is eager to grace the hallowed Wembley turf for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

He said: "I am really excited. Me and my mum both saw the competition and we only decided on the day that nominations closed to enter so I am really glad that we went for it.

"I think it will be one of the best experiences of my life because I will get to meet people from all different age groups from all over the country. It really makes me feel happy seeing other people happy when I sing."

The 12-year-old, who is part of Dowdales School's choir, is never one to shy away from getting up on karaoke and has already performed in front of 300 people at the Forum in Barrow.

However, despite having a much bigger audience to please in the capital, Callum isn't fazed about the prospect of singing in front of thousands with classically-trained vocalist Lizzie Jones.

He said: "It will definitely be a little bit nerve wracking but I have sung in front of lots of people before so I have got the experience of doing that.

"I am more excited than anything else and I am looking forward to getting some tips off the other singers and the conductor Steve Thompson."

One of Callum's biggest fans is his mum, Karen Woodall, who nominated her son for the opportunity and will be travelling to London to revel in his achievement.

She said: "It is a dream come true to watch your child perform and I never once imagined I would see my son playing at Wembley. I can't wait to see his little face out there will all of the other singers.

"The whole family are delighted for him and they are going to video it to make sure they see his little shiny face on the TV. The two of us have a really great relationship and I couldn't be prouder of what he has achieved."
