A CUMBRIAN MP faced an unusual grilling on a radio politics show this morning.

Appearing on BBC Radio 5 Live's Pienaar's Politics, Barrow and Furness MP John Woodcock was quizzed on his relationship with labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Mr Woodcock, who has been a critic of Mr Corbyn for a number of years, was asked whether, to get the last coconut, he would sing a chorus of 'Ohh Jeremy Corbyn'.

He said: "I'd take my chances on a passing ship. To use the metaphor, the ship has sailed for me quite some time ago on that.

"There is no point in me trying to get back with Jeremy at this stage."

He was also given the choice of one item to take with him, out of Labour's 2015 manifesto, a DVD of his favourite film the Godfather Part Two, or a DIY kit to build his own, independent, nuclear deterrent.

He said: "Obviously the deterrent. You can never be sure, even on a desert island where you could be the only person in the world.

"You still need that ultimate insurance policy."

In the Back Bench Questions segment of the show, presenter John Pienaar also quizzed Mr Woodcock on his childhood ambitions, juggling dreams and political heroes.

He said: "I wanted to be a fighter pilot when I was growing up, but my ambitions were smashed at an early age because I'm a little bit colourblind.

"I can juggle. It has been a few years now but growing up in the rough streets of Sheffield as a kid, you had to juggle to survive. I attended a juggling and circus club at school.

"Why would you go away to the circus when you see some of the stuff going on at the moment? I get the best of both worlds."

Mr Woodcock also praised the work of former Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough MP David Blunkett, who stepped down in 2015.

He said: "My political hero was David Blunkett. Growing up in Sheffield I was privileged to get to know David as a boy and his background of someone who came from a working class family in Sheffield, being blind, and battled through that real, genuine adversity to the height of the cabinet is extraordinary.

"He has kept that integrity in politics right the way through. He is a fabulous man."
