HUNDREDS of thousands of Labour party members will soon receive their ballot paper to vote in the upcoming leadership election.

Close to 650,000 people will be eligible cast a vote for the man they feel is best to lead Labour.

The campaign has been drawn out, and on occasion sparks have flown as allies of Mr Corbyn clashed with his critics.

Mr Corbyn and his challenger, former work and pensions secretary Own Smith went head to head in several TV debates to set out their policies.

Mr Corbyn has long been dogged by criticism of his leadership style, and whether he could actually win a general election for Labour.

He has been accused of being unelectable by the Mayor of London and former ally Sadiq Khan, the Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale and his own deputy leader, Tom Watson.

However this comes against the backdrop of one of the largest surges in membership the Labour party has ever seen.

In the months since the surprise Conservative victory in the general election and the even bigger surprise of Brexit, Labour membership stands at roughly 650,000.

This stands in stark contrast to the roughly 150,000 that are registered as Conservative members.

However, it is not known out of these new members which candidate they will be voting for.

The huge crowds that flock to see Mr Corbyn are seen by his allies as proof that he has energised the electorate.

However, anti-Corbyn groups and MPs, including Barrow's own John Woodcock have been pushing to register people to vote Mr Corbyn out.

Members eligible to vote will have one month to make their decision, with the deadline to cast a vote at Midday on September 21.

The winner will then be annouced on September 24.
