For many families September is a very expensive month, following what has been an expensive summer of school holiday activities.

School uniforms and materials like books, stickers and pens may seem to cost a little, but when you add them up can really make working families feel the pinch.

We asked a number of parents how they make their money stretch further.

Uniform

A firm favourite each year with parents, George at Asda are easing the burden the back to school rush brings by offering uniform at a bargain price.

This year jumpers cost as little as £2, packs of polos from £2.50 and trousers from £3.

Money back website Top Cashback are also offering new members a free spend of up to £15 when they buy online.

The offer is valid until September 10 on all school items from uniform to pens, pencils and lunchboxes.

Discount favourite Aldi are offering boys and girls deals with three items costing £3.75- a sweatshirt, pack of two polos and skirt or trousers.

Recycle! Many families are stretched to the brink at this time of year so why not donate your old uniforms to your school's lost property box where they can be put to better use than the dustbin.

Stationery

Poundland are offering 3 for £1 on a range of items your child will need.

WH Smith have slashed prices with a range of pens, pencils and notebooks half price.

Tesco have gone one further and cut a number of goods to less than half price with a pack of 30 Sharpie permanent markers now £8, down from £22.

Packed lunches

Instead of a typical sandwich and packet of crisps, Asda are encouraging parents to try some international thinking and make "Bento boxes."

Bento boxes come from Japan and the word translates to 'boxed meal'- they should be a mix of different foods which appeal to children because they are colourful and a range of textures.

Use cookie cutters to transform veggies or fruits into different shapes.

Try these ideas for colour and flavour:

-Ham, brocolli and sweetcorn frittata

- Falafel wraps (toast them in the morning and wrap in foil to keep warm)

- Pitta bread pockets: stuff with your child's favourite filling

- Potato salad: Mixed with mayo or creme fraiche and hidden full of veg like cucumber, tomatoes and onions.
