A YOUNG seal is set to spend time in 'rehab' after the stricken animal was spotted on the beach at Roa Island.

Worried members of the public called South Lakes Veterinary Centre in Ulverston after discovering the weak and emaciated pup stranded on the shore.

Well-meaning bystanders suggested attempting to chase the seal back into the water but vets advised against taking this course of action.

The vets got in touch with the British Divers Marine Life Rescue and a local marine mammal medic and vet nurse went to the scene last week.

Sarah Neill, Cumbria coordinator for the British Divers Marine Life Rescue said: "The medic went out to assess the pup and it was clear to see the pup was very weak and emaciated.

"Well-meaning members of the public suggested chasing the seal pup back into the sea, however this is not something that you should do. Seals do not spend all of their time in water and regularly come on to land for well-needed rest.

"Thankfully our medic was able lift the pup and take to South Lakes Veterinary Centre for initial vet checks and treatment.

"From here the pup spent a night resting in the facilities at Kendal College Animal Rescue Centre and was transported to a sanctuary with long term care facilities the following day. The sanctuary has already updated us that the pup will be in rehab for a while but is doing well."
