PUPILS from a local school brought the house down with their end of year production of Oliver!

Children aged between nine and 11 from Yarlside Academy in Barrow wowed more than 500 parents over two performances with their rendition of 'Food, Glorious Food' and 'Consider Yourself' on July 11.

The creative director for the play, Jill Reid, who teaches Year Five said the play was a great success. She said: "It was absolutely fantastic; the children were brilliant."

The play helped bring to life the syllabus for the children who had been studying the Victorians.

Mrs Reid and 64 children worked for six weeks in order to get the show ready.

She said: "Just putting it all together is the challenging part."

In spite of having to coordinate dozens of children, Mrs Reid says that the children have gained so much out of the show.

She said: "They got so much confidence, it made them feel so proud.

"After the show all they said was 'can we do it again?'"

Now looking forward to the summer break, Mrs Reid wanted to thank the people who made the show go off without a hitch.

She said: "Emma Fawcett from Demon Dance who gave us all the costumes was amazing. Thank you to ex-students and parents who helped us, and to Dowdales School who lent us the venue."
