VOLUNTEERS at a bird sanctuary have said they are "saddened and angry" after finding a shot heron in the street in Barrow.

Bardsea Bird Sanctuary said last night that they had found a heron which had been shot in Hollow Lane in Barrow.

The bird was taken to Archway Avian Vets in Grange but sadly it was found to be full of gunshot and had to be put to sleep.

A representative from the sanctuary said: "We are both deeply saddened and angry by this. Who could have shot this beautiful bird?

"Any information will be dealt with confidentially, so please - if anyone has heard anything or knows of someone who could of done this terrible thing please let us know.

"R.I.P. beautiful heron. This earth and its wildlife shouldn't have any place for some of the evil people that are violating it."
