A  councillor has called caravans parked on a  street near a town's cemetery an 'eyesore'.

Residents have also expressed their anger at the caravans, which have been seen parked in  Devonshire Road, Barrow.

It is not known who they belong to or who is parking them.

One nearby resident, who did not wish to be named, contacted the Evening Mail to raise the issue.

They said: "I think it's really disrespectful and unsightly to have them all so close to the entrance to our cemetery.

"The town hall have told me themselves that they've had lots of complaints."

Bill McEwan, borough councillor for Ormsgill,  said  residents have made him aware of the situation and that the parked caravans look bad for the area.

He said: "I am very much aware of this and I have passed it on to the highways department.

"People have contacted me personally from the area about this and other people are noticing it as well."

"It is an eyesore and it is very unsightly to have them there."

People in the neighbouring streets of Devonshire Road have expressed their confusion on the situation, which has seen the caravans parked on both sides of the road on the approach to the nearby cemetery.

Reports say that the number of caravans parked on the street have increased in the last year, with some suggestions that there are sometimes as many as eight of them lining the roadside each day.

Cumbria County Council  has said that they will be working with the police on the matter.

A CCC spokesperson said: "We are aware of the issue and we are working with the police to try and resolve this.

"Unattached trailers and caravans should not be left on the highway."
