INCREDIBLE new aerial footage of a huge industrial site has been published as its future hangs in the balance.

In yesterday's Evening Mail, we revealed how the redevelopment of the 17-acre Salthouse Mills in Barrow looks set to stall after the owners put the land on the market with Barrow Borough Council poised to remove it from its list of preferred housing sites.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service bosses have warned that there is a significant risk of someone being killed at the site, with firefighters being called there increasingly regularly to tackle deliberate blazes.

More than a decade ago, plans were put forward to revitalise Barrow's redundant docks into a marina village, holiday park and housing estate. The area of Salthouse Mills was set to be transformed into 250 luxury homes and the site was snapped up by Manchester property developer, Amstone, for £1.35m in 2007.

However, despite being earmarked in Barrow Borough Council's plan as an allocated site for the future development of the town, the last nine years have seen little progress at Salthouse Mills. Discussions between Amstone and neighbouring landowners - who would need to sell up in order to provide access for construction traffic - have so far been unproductive.

Chartered surveyors Edwin Thompson is marketing the land at £1.6m. Any sale is subject to an overage provision - requiring the owner to give 40 per cent of any increase in value, as a result of planning permission being obtained to develop the site, to former owner Robin Walmsley.

In order to give an insight into the scale and size of the site, Ulverston-based firm TWIST TECHNOLOGY , part of Furness Engineering and Technology, filmed some incredible footage using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle.

The drone shot more than three minutes of breathtaking footage, showing the expanse of the site and the amount of works which would need to be undertaken to convert the site into housing.

Furness Engineering and Technology Ltd  employs in excess of 100 people in Ulverston and Barrow, and uses remote-controlled drones to film hard-to-reach areas at large industrial sites or rural regions. One of the company's biggest clients is Sellafield.
