THE A590 at Lindal is set to be fully reopened to traffic in both directions on Saturday - after two overnight road closures on Thursday and Friday.

Highways England has spent £1.6m on the ambitious "Lindal Dip" project, which has effectively levelled the gradient of the A590.

Since November, motorists have been hit by road closures, temporary traffic lights and reduced speed limits but now the end is finally in sight.

The road will be completely closed overnight on Thursday March 23 from 8pm to 6am and Friday March 24 from 8pm to 6am on Saturday March 25 when the A590 will be completely open to traffic travelling in both directions.

Highways England have said an official diversion will be in place, clearly signposted for motorists.

Drivers travelling to Barrow will be directed to the A5092 off the Greenodd roundabout to Grizebeck before taking the A595 south to Askam, where they can rejoin the A590.

The same route will be used for drivers travelling in the opposite direction.

During the work, the road has been moved, in parts, seven metres north west and raised by up to two metres. A 1.2 metre diameter drainage pipe has been installed underground to help store rain water before slowly releasing it away.

Highways England bosses thanked local residents for their cooperation and understanding.
