SATURDAY marks the 51st anniversary of the Keswick to Barrow walk, with keen fundraisers preparing to follow in the footsteps of countless heroes before them.

Young and old alike have faced the 43-mile challenge over the years, with everyone raising valuable money for charities close to their heart.

The event grew from humble beginnings as a friendly competition between American submarine experts and Barrow-based workers.

Over half a century later and thousands are set to take on the Cumbrian institution once again this weekend.

The 43-mile battle will inevitably take its toll on anyone's body, with help always on hand to deal with the aches and pains along the way.

The volunteers and spectators are invaluable to the event, and will be cheering on the walkers as they make their way through the idyllic Cumbrian countryside.

With final preparations under way, we take a look through our picture archive to see how things have changed.

Amid the short shorts and route tweaks, the laughter and mischief remains evergreen.
