Celebrate with awards

ENERGY related businesses will be among those taking part in the annual CN Group Business Awards to be launched later this month.

Entries to the 2014 awards, being held in association with the Cumbria Business Growth Hub, will be invited from the final week of May.

The awards will culminate in a gala evening to be held at Carlisle Racecourse on Thursday October 16.

CN Group stages the awards and last year’s winners included Workington-based TIS Cumbria, joint winner of Manufacturer of the Year.

TIS made a £3.4m investment in a 50,000sq ft facility at its site at Derwent Howe. The building houses offices, a rig hall and manufacturing facilities with three 20-ton overhead cranes.

It also houses an industrial radiography unit equipped with X-ray equipment and state-of-the-art digital imaging to carry out testing for the nuclear and oil and gas industries.

TIS Cumbria received a £700,000 grant from Britain’s Energy Coast under the Investing in Business scheme. This follows a £150,000 grant from BEC in 2011.

Mr O’Pray, said: “It would have taken us another three or four years to initiate [the project] without their support so we are very grateful. We have remained committed to investing in the business, Workington and West Cumbria since we started and this expansion shows just how confident we are for the future.”

The rig hall was completed last September and is now occupied by a Tier 2 company for the next three years. The remaining project is likely to be completed over the next seven weeks when it will be fully operational.

The expanding firm hopes to announce more apprenticeship opportunities later in the year.

Following the CN awards, Britain’s Energy Coast Business Cluster will host its 2014 awards in November. The award categories have been refreshed this year to encourage the full range of member companies to get involved and to celebrate their achievements.

Liz Bowe of PacTec Europe and one of the organisers, said: “We organise the awards so that they alternate with the eboc conference, creating a regular November event. We’re keen that the awards should represent our growing membership – over 220 organisations at the last count – not only featuring the bigger nuclear-related businesses but also the SMEs and smaller service companies and consultancies that are playing an important part in the region’s business success.”

There are eight categories in all for 2014, six themes and then the BECBC Large and Small Businesses of the Year as well as a special award to mark the tenth anniversary of BECBC, which involves BECBC members nominating those who have made an Outstanding Contribution to the Aims of BECBC.

Entrants have until May 30 to make their applications.
