Conservative Bob Maltman was the new councillor for Barrow's Newbarns ward after winning a by-election with 52 per cent of the votes.

The flowers outside the Rose and Crown pub won an award from organisers of the Ulverston in Bloom competition. The blooms were tended by Kevin Sedgwick.

A terraced house in Lime Street, Barrow, was offered for sale at £74,950. An extended detached house at Springfield Road, Ulverston, was £495,000.

Barrow maritime musicians from TS Sovereign and the Marine Cadet Band won a national contest at Plymouth Hoe to become the best traditional drum and bugle band.

Barrow was poised to become the hub of a multi-million pound mussel farming venture which could create 50 jobs by next summer.

A semi-detached house at Sheeplands Grove, Barrow, was offered for sale at £46,950. A terraced house with a bay window at Stafford Street, Barrow, was £28,950.

An appeal to raise £30,000 to buy Bardsea's Sea Wood as a public open space had raised its first £7,000. Cumbria County Council wanted to sell the 50-acre woodland site near to the coast road.
