VOTERS in Barrow and Furness have revealed they would vote for a Labour candidate and not John Woodcock as an independent MP in an online poll.

The Barrow and Furness MP's vow to remain in post until the next General Election came after the Labour North West reportedly voted unanimously to call for Mr Woodcock to trigger a by-election.

One party member said on Twitter: "Labour's North West Regional Board unanimously voted to support Party members in Barrow-in-Furness CLP in getting a proper Labour MP and demanded that John Woodcock stands down immediately."

Labour North West refused to comment when approached by The Mail .

The now independent MP, who resigned from Labour last week amid his concerns about the impartiality of an investigation into allegations he sexually harassed a female aide, hinted he would not stand down and trigger a by-election in a statement to

The Mail .

“There is so much to do on behalf of our brilliant community and nothing will distract me from making our voice heard in Westminster for the rest of this parliamentary term," Mr Woodcock said.

"I was elected last year to fight for a decent train service, for the jobs our young people need and for an end to the damaging squeeze on NHS and schools funding. I will work with anyone and everyone who shares those priorities and wants to put Furness first in the months and years ahead.”

In an online Mail poll, around two thirds of the hundreds who have voted so far said they would put their mark next to whichever Labour candidate is picked to stand in Barrow, with just 17 per cent vowing to stick by Mr Woodcock.

Around 10 per cent said they would vote for a Conservative candidate while just one per cent would vote for a Lib-Dem candidate. The remaining three per cent would vote for another candidate not listed.
