Woolworths jobs threat

OVER 35 more jobs in Furness were under threat today at branches of Woolworths as the national group faced the prospect of possible closure.
The store in Dalton Road, Barrow, was open and busy this morning.
Manager Adam Plevin said he was not allowed to comment on the situation but said it was business as usual.
There is also a smaller branch of Woolworths in Ulverston.
The Barrow store had a makeover only last year.
Nationally, Woolworths has 30,000 staff and more than 800 stores but has gone into administration after anxious banks called in loans.
Administrator Deloitte, whose appointment was confirmed today, said it had received interest from “a number of parties” for both the retail arm and the firm’s E.UK wholesaling operation in the past 24 hours.
Deloitte’s reorganisation services partner Dan Butters said: “We are working hard to ensure that any sale of the business, in whole or part, will preserve jobs.”
The reformed MFI has also gone into administration and shut 26 stores only weeks after Barrow’s MFI shut with the loss of eight jobs because of the credit crunch effect.

Have your say
Not a good day for Woolworth's employees, although it has to be said that Woolies has suffered from a lack of direction and an identity crisis for years.
