Make the effort to dress well, suggests club chief

BOSSES of Barrow’s newest nightclub have defended their strict dress code.

More than 1,500 people went to Club M in Cornwallis Street on its opening night last Saturday.

But some of those trying to get in were turned away because their clothes were deemed unsuitable.

Stuart Bowes, director of One Leisure, the Durham company which spent £1.2m buying, redesigning and refurbishing the old Martinis nightclub to make it Club M, insists their dress code will ensure they pull in the right punters.

Mr Bowes said: “In response to claims that a large number of people were refused admission, I can confirm that a proportion of customers were declined entry.

“My advice to anyone visiting Club M is to make the effort.

“Club M has raised the bar on the standard of nightlife in Barrow, it is only fair customers should consider their appearance and behaviour by return.

“Whilst trainers, denims and t-shirts do form part of a modern day clubbers’ dress code, it’s about wearing these items with style and flair. Customers should keep their attire box fresh and, if in doubt, wear their very best. Of course, there are circumstances when some people just don’t fit the bill. Refusing entry is not a pretty business and we take no enjoyment from it.

“However, the standards are set and I’m satisfied our admission criteria will determine the right clientele within the club.”

Mr Bowes said the launch night was “a major success” and customers gave Club M “an overwhelming thumbs up”.

He said: “We’re humbled by the public support and volume of best wishes received and One Leisure would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Barrow. We recently promised any improvement to the town centre nightlife would benefit not just our own outlets but other bars and clubs. I’m sure all licensees in the immediate area would agree they enjoyed an upturn in trade last Saturday night.”

Mr Bowes said the opening evening ran without incident. Full credit had to be given to the security measures and vigilance of staff, he said.

The group bought three nightclubs and two hotels in Barrow early last year. Mr Bowes said: “Club Mremains top priority. We have a successful launch under our belt but it doesn’t stop there.”

Well now, should I book a flight home and see the newest night club in Barrow or maybe slip down to the Viper Pit in Hollywood or maybe the Garland in Los Angeles or even drive a couple of hours to Las Vegas.
Oh Decisions decisions!?
