FAMILY tributes were left at the statue of Barrow-born football legend Emlyn Hughes on the anniversary of his death.
Flowers and a loving message were placed at the bronze statute of the former Liverpool and England captain on the fourth anniversary, which fell on Remembrance Sunday.
One of the children in the family tied a Liverpool FC scarf around the statue, which stands outside Emlyn Hughes House, on Abbey Road, Barrow.
A note on the flowers reads: “In loving memory of Emlyn. Mam, and all the family 9/11/08.”
Mr Hughes died on November 9, 2004, aged 57, after battling a brain tumour.
It is a lasting legacy to the football hero, who captained Liverpool to two European Cup final victories in 1977 and 1978.
Mr Hughes’ mum, Anne Hughes, said: “The statue is wonderful. I get off the bus and I say hello to him before I go up Dalton Road.”
Mrs Hughes said the whole family is celebrating the arrival of Mr Hughes’ first grandchild.
The legend’s daughter, Emma Stone, gave birth to a son last Tuesday in London. He has been named Cameron Emlyn.
Mrs Hughes, said: “Emlyn would be dead chuffed. We are all delighted.”
The statue of Mr Hughes was dedicated in April by former FA chief executive Brian Barwick.
The player won 62 England caps and was captain 23 times. He was awarded an OBE, and was made a Freeman of the Borough of Barrow posthumously in 2005.
