TWO men were today rescued by firefighters after a blaze broke out in the living room of their terraced home.
Both men were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. Watch manager Steve Bushell said the men owed their lives to smoke detectors, which gave them an early warning.
Speaking at the scene Mr Bushell said: “When we arrived we had a look round the back and one occupant was hanging out the window and one was on the flat roof because the smoke was so intense inside.
“They had been alerted by the smoke detectors which no doubt did save their lives. There was one person downstairs and one person upstairs and the smoke detector managed to alert them.
“The occupier was saying there was thick black smoke when he woke up.”
Barrow Fire and Rescue Service were called out at 6.37am today.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel to extinguish the blaze.
The fire was contained to the ground floor living room but the rest of the property was extensively smoke-logged.
While they were at the scene firefighters fitted smoke detectors to the neighbouring property and will carry out a “hot strike” of the street.
To reduce the risk of further incidents the fire service will visit every house in Stewart Street to offer residents free smoke detectors.
The cause of the blaze is being investigated.
