A CHARITY for disabled people is about to learn whether it has won a pot of public money to help continue its work.
Barrow and District Disability Association, which has 2,400 members of various ages, has applied to Barrow Borough Council for £15,000.
Councillors on the council’s grants sub-committee will decide on Thursday whether to award the cash to the association.
Margaret Burrow, honorary secretary of the association, was unavailable at its base on School Street, Barrow.
But in her grant application to the council, Mrs Burrow explained how the money would be spent.
“The requested money will be used with other grants, donations and service level agreements to provide a very wide range of services and activities to disabled people,” she said.
“This grant will be targeted towards staff costs.”
The committee will also consider giving money to other organisations, albeit much smaller amounts.
Barrow Fairtrade Group, set up in September 2004 and which meets at the town hall, has applied for £346 to spend on leaflets.
Four Groves Community Association on Suffolk Street, Barrow, which has 40 members from “cradle to grave”, is seeking £1,170 from the council. A sum of £920 is to put an alarm system in its revamped centre and £250 is for a fun day.
Furness Multi-Cultural Forum, on Cavendish Street, Barrow, which has 238 members of different ages, is asking the council for £1,000 to spend on an anti-racism event.
Ocean Wave Community Centre, on Ocean Road, Walney, is requesting £1,000 for a group day trip and Christmas meal, and Dalton Community Association, of Nelson Street, wants £700 from the council to buy educational and fun games.
Thursday’s grants sub-committee meeting is due to start at 2pm.
The appointment of a chairman is top of the agenda.
