Students praised at gala awards night

THE outstanding achievements of students have been celebrated at a gala awards evening.

Furness College Awards Ceremony honoured students who have completed a broad range of further education, university courses and apprenticeships at the Barrow institution.
The students were nominated by their tutors for a range of reasons,. These including their outstanding achievement, the ability to overcome personal problems, balancing family life and study, and their commitment to their attendance, studies and quality of workproduced.
Families, colleagues, tutors and invited guests watched the students collect their awards this summer
Guest speaker was Professor Derek Seward, director of Regional Outreach at Lancaster University.
Anne Attwood, the principal of Furness College, congratulated the students on their hard work.
She said: “It is an honour to reward these students who have shown such outstanding qualities.”
The 16 -18 winner was David Cottington who completed an NVQ Level Two in hairdressing.
The 19-year-old was a national finalist at the UK Skills, WorldSkills UK competition at L’Oreal in London after being placed in a regional event.
David has worked hard to secure clientele and gain assessments by working additional evenings in The Studio salon.
Adult award winner was Matthew Cush.
The Sellafield employee is working towards a BEng (Hons) engineering degree at the college.
He attained some of the highest grades of any student to progress to this level at the college. The college says he has shown the ability to integrate both his theoretical studies along with his practical and analytical skills.
