Asbestos probe at Furness football club

POTENTIALLY dangerous asbestos has been dumped at a Furness football club.
A rogue builder is being blamed for disposing roof sheets and roof tiles outside Holker Old Boys’ Rakesmoor Lane clubhouse.
Fly-tipping is a criminal offence and those responsible can face five years behind bars and/or a £50,000 fine.
Club spokesman Tony Macmillan said: “As you can see from the photograph some kind builder has decided Holker clubhouse is a council tip. They have dumped roof sheets and roof tiles, which are littered outside the bar entrance.
“We believe that someone may have seen these being removed from a property in the area and taken away to be properly disposed of. They may have come from your house and you paid someone to take them away.
“If this does look familiar can you contact the police or the Environment Agency so we can stop this dangerous practice happening again on football pitches, where young children play every weekend.”
Barrow Borough Council environmental health senior enforcement officer, Joan Carroll, said it was unfortunate but as the asbestos has been dumped on private land, but it’s now up to the football club to remove it safely.
Ms Carroll said: “It’s up Holker to remove it as they are the occupiers of the land.
“This is one of the consequences of fly-tipping.”
She said that even if such rubbish was dumped in a garden it would be up to the householder to remove it.
She said: “All we can advise is that people double bag it and then take it to a civic community tip and tell the attendant if it is asbestos you are dumping.
“I think Holker have hired a skip which is another way of getting rid of it.
“This just shows another reason why fly-tipping is so anti-social.
“It gets worse at this time of year too, because of the good weather and the increase in DIY and people hiring builders for outside work.
“Check if your builder has got a Waste Carrier Licence. There is a link on our website to check with the Environment Agency or ring us and we’ll do it for you.”
Ms Carroll is also wanting help in tracking down those responsible for dumping a carpet and curtains at the back of Longreins Road, Barrow.
She said: “Someone must recognise the two different carpets and curtain as having been removed from either your house or a neighbours.”
Last month asbestos was also dumped near E K Motor Factors Ltd on Andrews Way, Barrow.
