BARROW and Furness MP John Woodcock took the Europe debate to the supermarket aisles.

Mr Woodcock was making the case for remaining in the European Union with some of his constituents.

While visiting Morrisons, in Barrow, Mr Woodcock chatted with fishmonger Joss Reed about the pros and cons of the issue.

Mr Woodcock said: “The stakes are very high and so it is important that this debate happens anywhere and everywhere – and Morrisons while you are buying prawns is as good a place as any.

"Joss is in the eurosceptic camp, but it was great that he took the time to talk and I hope I managed to give him a couple of reasons for staying in that were worth considering. If we voted to leave then trade, investment and jobs would all be put at risk and Furness companies could face obstacles in accessing vital European markets.

“Workers in the UK benefit from statutory paid holidays and there are rights for agency workers because the last Labour government signed up to the social chapter. Leaving the EU raise question marks over workers’ rights.

“Finally, leaving the EU would make us more vulnerable and less secure.

Unfortunately we live in a world where European countries like us are a target for violent extremism."
