MULTI award winning Manchester music pioneers The Stone Roses will be visiting Cumbria next week.

The rockers announced on social media yesterday that they would be playing a surprise gig at The Sands Centre, Carlisle, on Wednesday.

But with a fan loyalty twist, fans had to take a piece of merchandise to the venue in order to buy tickets. Writing on their social media page "personal callers only with a Stone Roses record, concert ticket or t-shirt".

Hundreds of fans queued up for tickets for the gig which sold out in around four hours.

The Stone Roses formed in 1983 and became one of the most well known acts in Manchester.

The band's lineup hit its prime with members Ian Brown, John Squire, Mani and Remi.

They dissolved in 1996, but announced in 2011 they were to play a reunion tour in 2012, and will be appearing at many dates over the summer.
