TOP comedian Eddie Izzard will visit a Barrow college for a "celebrity revision session" after students contacted him on Twitter.

The popular comic and marathon man will visit Barrow Sixth Form College as part of his Stand Up for Europe campaign on May 31.

Students will be able to quiz the comic on all aspects of the "Brexit" debate as they prepare for A-Level exams in subjects including government and politics, business, law, French and German.

Tutor Caroline Buckley said the college was one of the only places in the North West where politics could be studied at A-Level and students were highly engaged in the EU referendum debate.

Mrs Buckley said: “When our students found out he was visiting Cumbria, they were tweeting him like mad to ask him to come into college so they can hear his views first-hand.

“Europe is such a hot topic at the moment and there are so many statements floating around, it will be great for them to be able to ask him questions on the themes we’ve been covering in class.

"This decision is something that will have a big impact on their futures and they want to be informed. We invited Boris Johnson to come up to sixth form too, he can give the other side of the argument.”

Politics student Louise Linton, one of those who Tweeted the comic, said: “We all wanted him to come into college to speak to us because he is really into politics and knows all the technical stuff. It’s pretty exciting and I’m sure he’ll have something to say on the areas we’ve been covering, which is useful for our exams.”

The event is part of the comedian’s campaign to encourage a vote to remain in Europe, and is for the college's students. It follows discussions on the EU referendum with Green Party leader Natalie Bennett and a Question Time-style panel event with Cumbria business leaders.

College principal David Batten said: “As part of their course, our students visit Strasbourg to see how the European parliament works. They have a good grasp of the EU and I am sure they will have lots of challenging questions.”

Eddie Izzard play his Force Majeure show at The Beggar’s Theatre, Millom, in three languages - English, French and German - that evening with some tickets still available for the shows in French and German.
