A MAN who was so disgusted by all the rubbish he saw dumped by a recycling point stood outside for more than two hours to warn off fly-tippers.

Garry Fell from Newbarns, Barrow, was out walking with his four-year-old daughter when he noticed the "mountain of rubbish" at the Park Leisure Recycling Centre on Monday.

After taking his daughter home he then decided to head back to the recycling centre to deter further fly-tipping.

He said: "I have been here for a couple of hours and I have caught about half a dozen fly-tippers.

"My four-year-old daughter originally pointed the mess out to me and she didn't understand why people couldn't put their rubbish in a bin. It's a disgrace."

Nappies, tables, chairs, a fridge and old Christmas wrapping are just some of the items that have been dumped outside the recycling centre. And recycling drop-off points at both Tesco and Morrisons in Barrow have been overflowing with dumped rubbish.

Earlier this year Barrow Borough Council reported a continual problem with fly-tipping in the area.

And new figures from Defra revealed that there were 1,377 incidents of fly-tipping in the Barrow borough last year, which cost the council £73,353 to clean up.

Last month, street care officer Nick Christofides warned members of the public he will not hesitate to prosecute those guilty of fly-tipping.

Two weeks ago a man pleaded guilty at Furness Magistrates' Court to fly-tipping 14 bags of rubbish at the Park Leisure Recycling Site. He was ordered to pay a £300 fine, £300 costs, £180 court charges and £30 victim surcharge.

When Mr Fell saw people trying to add to the mountain of rubbish he informed them that they needed to go to the Household Waste Recycling Centre in Walney Road, Barrow.

He said: "It's not recycling, it's just people dumping stuff they no longer need.

"It needs policing somehow, maybe even a security camera would help.

"When I told people that they need to take it to the tip and it's free they have claimed that they didn't know about it. They have then got back in their car and driven off - hopefully to the tip.

"Once people see one bag dumped they start to think it's OK to leave more.

"This drives me insane."

Mr Fell is determined to head back down to the recycling site on New Years Day to deter more fly-tippers.

The Household Waste Recycling Centre in Park Road will be open on New Year's Eve from 8pm until 4pm. It will be closed on New Year's Day and then open again as normal from January 2.
