A595 campaigners are discussing the potential for reclassifying the route as a trunk road from South Cumbria to Sellafield to bring real focus on needed improvements.
At its public meeting today (Saturday), the A595 Action Group blasted the road as "not fit for purpose", particularly at Grizebeck, which has been labelled as having the "worst bottlenecks" on an A road in the county, possibly the country.
In the light of the huge industrial developments campaigners say the road connection between Barrow to Sellafield must be improved.
Cumbrian MPs, John Woodcock, Jamie Reed and John Stevenson are demanding the upgrading of the A595.
Mr Stevenson, MP for Carlisle, wrote to Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin calling on him to put the whole of the A595 from Barrow to Carlisle under Highways England.
