Barrow woman overcomes fear of electric hair clippers for charity

A WOMAN whose brother is battling cancer overcame her fear of electric hair clippers to raise hundreds of pounds for charity.

Barbara Wadeson cut off her long locks to help raise money for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association and Cancer Research on her brother Alan Griffiths’ 60th birthday.

Mrs Wadeson was watched by Mr Griffiths, his ex-wife Christine Griffiths, and her sisters Janet Moorhouse – who travelled from Liverpool – and Linda Sharratt.Mr Griffiths’ daughter Kelsey and grandchildren Oliver Ramsey and Paige Ramsey also witnessed the head-shave.

Mr Griffiths was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2010 before he was then diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a disease which damages valves in the heart.

Mrs Wadeson, of Brighton Street, Barrow, said: “I’ve always been a bit fearful of electric clippers. I’ve always liked having long hair.

“I just hope my brother is OK.”

As she sat with her hair platted in Kalipso Salon, in Napier Street, Barrow, the 57-year-old appeared a little nervous but surrounded by her family, she plucked up the courage to have her locks chopped off – all in the name of charity.

Despite her nerves, Mrs Wadeson was praised by her long-term hairdresser Sandra Melia, who said: “She doesn’t like her hair being cut at all, I would say shall I take an inch off and she’d say no, half an inch – I’ll come back in six weeks.”

Mr Griffiths, who served in the King’s Own Royal Border Regiment until his retirement in 1998, said: “We’re a very close knit family.

“I’m very proud of her – I never thought she’d do this.”

Mrs Wadeson has so far raised more than £500 and he family hope the total will reach £750 in coming weeks.
