Barrow volunteers set to bring a ray of sunshine to Comic Relief fund

MOST people might think there is nothing remotely funny about contorting your skeleton into an assortment of painful-looking positions.
But a local business is out to prove that yoga and laughter do, in fact, mix, when it holds a special challenge for Comic Relief next week.
Staff at Furness Internet are aiming to complete 1,440 sun salutations – one for every minute of the day – to raise money for the annual appeal.
A sun salutation comprises a series of basic yoga poses that can be tailored to suit practitioners of any age, ability, experience and flexibility.
And that is important because the Furness Internet staff are calling on the community to show their support and join in the fun next Friday.
Under the guidance of the company’s resident yoga teacher, Anya Graham, locals are urged to turn up, make a donation and do as many salutations as they can.
When Miss Graham, 23, is not serving in her role as deputy web team manager, she runs the Vivre Yoga studio in Holbeck.
A yoga enthusiast since she was 10, she said the discipline was great for improving physical, mental and spiritual well-being.
“I actually teach quite a few members of staff here and we were looking for something to do for Red Nose Day,” she said.
“I’ll be there on the day to teach people a version of the sun salutation that’s suitable for them, so people don’t have to be daunted.”
Furness Internet, which has been operating in Barrow for about 17 years, has set itself a conservative target of raising £100 to help fight poverty and social injustice.
But Miss Graham is hoping the challenge can capture the public’s imagination and they will exceed their expectations.
“Even if somebody comes along and maybe only does one or two and drops some money in the pot, then hopefully we’ll be raise more than that.”
The challenge will take place in the conference room at the Trinity Enterprise Centre between 9am and 4.30pm next Friday.
