Barrow teenager broke police officer’s fingers in escape bid

A BARROW teenager who broke a police officer’s fingers in an attempt to escape arrest has avoided a jail sentence.

Christopher Lewis McQuillan, 19, of Park Road, Barrow, pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent at Furness Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The court heard the victim, PC Karen Edmondson, had been assisting a colleague make an arrest at Barrow Indoor Market on October 10.

As the suspect was led away, PC Edmondson was informed that McQuillan, the subject of an outstanding arrest warrant, had been spotted in the market. PC Edmondson located McQuillan and led him outside, where he began to resist.

Mrs Lisa Hine, prosecuting, said PC Edmondson’s handcuffs had been used during the original arrest and she had been gripping McQuillan by the arm. She said McQuillan broke free of the officer’s grip, breaking two of her fingers, but he was arrested by another officer in Dalton Road.

Mr Trystan Roberts, defending, said McQuillan had asked PC Edmondson if he could go back into the market to let his mother know about his arrest but she refused. He also expressed remorse for causing the injury.

Presiding magistrate, Catherine Alexander sentenced McQuillan to 200 hours of unpaid work, ordered him to pay £200 compensation to the officer and a £60 victim surcharge.
