Barrow teacher Debra Hurley has a special reason to celebrate her school’s 40th anniversary.
For the 43-year-old, a reception teacher at St Pius X in Barrow, was taught in the same classroom where she now works.
Mrs Hurley, of Chapel Field, Walney, was in the class in its first year in May 1974. She started teaching at the school in 1992 – having taken over from her reception teacher.
Mrs Hurley said the layout of the school was exactly the same as when she started as a pupil, but with some modern alterations.
She said: “The whole layout of the school is still the same, but obviously we have moved with the times.
“Classrooms are all the same. The outside area has improved massively.”
She added that building extensions and an IT suite had been other major improvements to the building.
In the 1970s there were bunkbeds in some rooms in the school for afternoon naps.
Mrs Hurley said pupils only had lessons in the morning with relaxation time in the afternoon.
She said: “When the school first opened my mum helped out with the church and was very heavily involved in the school.
“It was the start of what is now the parent teacher association.
“I started teaching at the school in 1992 and I’m now teaching the children of some of the parents I taught. I always wanted to be a teacher. It’s more than a job, they’re like a family to me. There’s a real sense of community.”
Headteacher Amy Bates is thrilled to be celebrating the school’s 40th anniversary.
She said: “I’m really excited. It’s nice to have big celebration.
“We benefit from having a lot of school governors, parents and staff who were pupils in those first few years of opening.”
