Barrow students excited by universities’ offers

A TEENAGER with a dream of working in Formula One is on track to secure a place at one of the world’s leading universities.

Chetwynde School’s Matthew Penellum has an offer to read engineering at the University of Cambridge, Homerton College.

The Barrow school’s headboy needs to achieve an A* and three As in his A-Levels.

The 18-year-old, of Millom, said: “It was pretty exciting when I got the news. When I went for my interviews, I thought they had gone badly, but obviously it went better than I thought it had. My family are very pleased.

“After my GCSEs I started looking at universities. Cambridge was what I was aiming for and now I have a chance. Hopefully, it should be doable, based on last year’s results I should be able to achieve it.

“The college I have applied to is one of the most modern colleges.”

Last Year Matthew completed a placement in France at the naval defence company DCNS which was organised through school. The student is a fan of Formula One and would like a career in the sport.

He said: “Ultimately I would like to work in Formula One, maybe as a designer or a mechanical engineer.”

Matthew, who has achieved his Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and has been a British Schools Orienteering competitor, said the support at Chetwynde is “brilliant”.

Fellow student Jasmin Tse has an offer for her top choice of Newcastle University to study French with international media and communication studies. The 17-year-old, of Ulverston, needs two As and a B.

The house captain said: “I’m really happy with the offer and I really want to go to Newcastle.

“I really have an eye and interest for media and I like seeing it develop and the big influence it has on people’s everyday lives. I think French would broaden my horizons and opportunities to work abroad.

“I am quite keen on social media and advertising, but I am also interested in teaching, Chetwynde has given me the opportunity to help teach Year Four German and Year One French and that does interest me.”

Jasmin added: “There are so many opportunities at this school.”

Sam Storey has a number of university offers for his chosen degree of philosophy, politics and economics, including Newcastle, Sheffield and York.

The 18-year-old deputy head boy is also hoping to get offers from Durham University and King’s College London.

The teenager, of Dendron, is pleased with his offers so far for which he would need to achieve three As.

He said: “This degree interests me because you get the maths side through the economics, and I really enjoy philosophy.”

Sam’s extended project is focusing on the leadership of Winston Churchill.

The student thanked his teachers for their excellent support. He has been a Chetwynde pupil since the juniors.
