Barrow Sixth Form College 'requires improvement' - Ofsted report

BARROW Sixth Form College “requires improvement” according to Ofsted, following an inspection in November.

The college in Rating Lane was categorised as a grade-two “good” college when it was last inspected in 2010, but, under new Ofsted guidelines, it has been downgraded to grade-three - which was formally “satisfactory”.

The report ruled: “Outcomes for students are not high enough and need improving for the majority of qualification types and student groups, especially those studying AS-level qualifications.

“The persistent underperformance of some advanced-level subjects requires improving very quickly.”

A number of schools across Cumbria have been inspected in recent weeks, as the education watchdog said it was concerned about local performance.

Have your say

I attended the Sixth Form College after moving from Scotland to Barrow in Furness, and I have to say the quality of education on offer there was excellent. I was always encouraged, I was taken on many trips, I received support in every manner from left right and centre and I received high grades. Now, when I attended there were various students who could not care less in attendance, they only attended for the EMA which has now been scrapped and the school leaving age increased. The quote 'especially those studying AS-level qualifications' should be taken in to consideration. You do not need to do any revision in order to pass GCSE exams as they are ridiculously easy, and students who fail AS Levels in their first year are proving themselves unsuitable for HE. It is not the College's fault that certain students do not make the grade!!!

From what I have read most schools in the recent round of inspections have dropped a grade. Have schools really suddenly all dropped standards, or is the government (who appoint the chief inspector) telling teachers they 'must try harder'. This government seems to think that bashing people is the way to get the most out of society. How about we stop treating education like a political football, where one team gets to pick the ref, and make Ofsted an independent regulator.
