Barrow Park’s Christmas carol sing-a-long

A STEEL band performed Christmas carols at a sing-a-long in Barrow Park.

More than 100 people turned up to the annual festive event held in the boat house.

Classic carols sung included Good King Wenceslas and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.

Friends of Barrow Park organise the free event, with donations from the raffle going to Ostley House for the Blind.

Treasurer Sheila Burns, 71, said: “This is the 14th year doing a sing-a-long. It’s a nice festive start to the season.

“Also it makes people aware that we have a wonderful park and that people will come and use it.

“It’s important because it brings the community together and is a way to give back and say thanks for using the park.

“We did a lot of fundraising to get it to this condition.”

The Friends of Barrow Park helped to raise about £2.1m to transform the park.

This included building the bandstand, new steps and child play areas.

Mrs Burns added: “You always hear people today complaining that it costs so much to do anything fun, especially for families. A park is free. You can play on the swings, or roll down the hill, or just use your imagination. It’s a big space to be used.

“I have a lot of memories in this park because it is where my son took his first steps.

“It’s important that people come to these community events to keep it going.”
