BARROW folk are being urged to Stand Up To Cancer – by getting a tattoo.
Pals Emma Price and Samantha McFarlane are planning to have the Stand Up to Cancer logo inked onto their bodies in a bid to raise funds for the charity.
The pair hope to raise around £300 and say that 10 people are already joining them to raise awareness of the condition.
Stand Up To Cancer was founded in 2008 and has raised more than £250m to help fight the disease.
Miss Price, 27, of Devon Street, Barrow, lost her best friend to leukaemia aged 12 and had a skin cancer scare herself two years ago.
As a result she came up with the campaign idea in a bid to raise funds – to date they have raised £195 and have a target of £300.
Miss Price said: “There is always someone you know going through cancer.
I wanted to raise money but I didn’t know how. I put it on Facebook and people said ‘do it’.”
Miss Price, who has a number of tattoos in memory of her friend Dale Burns who died in 2011, and her late grandfather who died of cancer, said they are a brilliant way to make a statement. She added: “I’ve lost count of how many tattoos I’ve got but each one means something.”
A passionate fundraiser, Miss Price is already planning an event for Comic Relief.
She said: “I’m not a stranger to fundraisers, I’ve done a few – I like making people smile.”
Miss McFarlane said: “We’re proud and surprised at how much interest we’ve got.
“I’ve got a few tattoos but nowhere near as many as Emma.”
The tattoos will be done at Michael’s Wonderland, in Cavendish Street, Barrow.
To get involved, or to make a donation, phone Miss Price on 07923 299348.

Have your say
With all the bad press about tattoo ink being a possible cause for concern, I am surprised anyone is thinking of getting one just now. There are hundreds of ways to raise money for charity without leaving permanent marks on your skin.
