Barrow Pals shed pounds to raise £££s

TWO cheeky chaps have lost a combined 16 pounds after a weight-loss bet over beers.
The pair decided to bet on who could lose the most weight in a week after Bill Crawshaw, 55, of North Scale, Walney, was called fat by pal Terry Palmer, 56, of King Alfred Street, Walney, over a pint.
Mr Cranshaw, a self-employed caterer, weighed 14st 12lb before he lost nine pounds between December 7 to Saturday, December 14.
He said: “Terry called me fat and I said he was looking big himself.
“We started betting who could lose the most weight in a week.”
Pub pals at the Crow’s Nest, in Ferry Road, Barrow Island, and loved ones bought raffle tickets in either pink or blue.
At the end of the week a ticket was picked from the winning colour.
More than £100 was raised through the raffle which the men have donated to St Mary’s Hospice.
Mr Palmer, a self-employed painter and decorator weighed 13st 5lb before losing seven pounds. During the week he drank a cup of tea for breakfast, either soup, eggs or fish for his lunch and no dinner.
He said: “I was starving. Never been so hungry in my life.
“It was worth it for a good cause. I’d do it again for charity.
“For now I’ve gone straight back on the pies and fish and chips.”
For breakfast Mr Cranshaw ate poached eggs on toast, his wife’s home-made vegetable soup for lunch, and half a chicken for dinner every night.
He said: “I wanted to lose weight but I wouldn’t have done it without Terry because of the competition.
“I would like to get down to about 13 stone. I’ve kept on the diet.
“I’ve just cut out fatty food.
“Being a caterer I’m around food all the time so it is easy to overeat.
“It’s very tempting.”
The £40 raffle prize was won by Mr Palmer’s wife who bet on Mr Cranshaw winning. She gave the cash to the hospice.
The pair chose the Ulverston-based charity because both had relatives who received care at the hospice.
They plan to compete in another weight-loss challenge in January after “fattening” up over Christmas.
