IT may have seemed like there was a mix-up in the morning, but there was a good reason for tots to wear odd socks this week.

The youngsters at Lynwood Day Nursery have sported mismatched socks for World Down Syndrome Day.

The Barrow nursery was supporting the event, which raises awareness about Down’s syndrome and how people with the condition play a vital role in our lives and communities.

Lynwood was keen to support the event as one of its pupils, three-year-old Moryn McGlynn, has Down’s syndrome.

The little ones wore their odd socks in exchange for a donation to Cumbria Down’s Syndrome Support Group, and the children also baked cakes which they sold for the cause.

World Down Syndrome Day officially takes place on March 21, but as there is a clash of dates with Comic Relief the nursery, in Hollow Lane, decided to mark the event ahead of schedule.

Sarah Leech, key worker for the pre-school, said: “The nursery wanted to support World Down Syndrome Day with an odd socks week. The children have been showing their support by wearing different-coloured socks, selling cup cakes and encouraging their parents to buy raffle tickets. Lynwood has been privileged to care for a number of children with Down’s and wants to increase awareness and support of the children.

“The children have loved getting involved although one little girl was convinced that all the grown-ups were ‘crazy’ for wearing odd socks.”

Moryn has attended the nursery since she was a baby and her mum, Arlene McGlynn says she is flourishing.

Mrs McGlynn, 36, said: “It’s great that the nursery is supporting this event, they are really good here. Moryn absolutely loves nursery. If it wasn’t for here Moryn would not be quite as advanced as she is. She is doing really well. At this age children don’t see Moryn as different.”

Mrs McGylnn said attitudes were changing through better understanding and welcomed the support of a Furness group which meets to offer support to the parents of children with Down’s syndrome.
