Barrow nurse to face drug possession charges

A FORMER Barrow nursing home nurse alleged to have been in possession of medication without permission will face a fitness to practise panel.

Julie Fay started work as a health care assistant at St George’s Nursing Home, Barrow, in October 2007 before becoming a registered nurse in December that year.

She will face the panel from the Nursing and Midwifery Council on July 7 at Old Bailey in London, to answer charges of possessing the medication on December 5, 2012.

The NMC alleges Fay had two blister packs of Furosemide tablets, a type of diuretic, in her possession. The tablets were labelled Resident A.

She is also alleged to have had one further 40mg blister pack of Furosemide, an empty blister pack of sleeping tablets Zoplicone, and six tablets of Clonazepam, used to treat seizure disorders or panic disorder.

The NMC also says she had a quantity of unnamed pills and blister packs.

She also faces a charge of removing a quantity of Codydramol, a type of painkiller, designated for Resident B, without clinical justification.

Fay is also alleged to have failed to record the administration of Codydramol to Resident B.

She left her post at St George’s in February 2013.

A spokeswoman from Risedale Care Homes, which runs St George’s, confirmed Fay had left the organisation but said they could not comment on the hearing, which is set to last three days.
