A MOTHER who left her three-year-old son at home alone with an empty methadone bottle has been ordered to attend a parenting course.
Furness Magistrates Court heard on Tuesday how she had left the house for 30 minutes on February 2 to go to a friend’s house.
A police officer found the child at an address in Roose and spoke to him through the letter box.
The court heard the child could not open the door and once the officer had gained entry via the back door he discovered there was nobody else in the property.
Mrs Lisa Hine, prosecuting said: “This young boy was left at home without any adult supervision, there was an empty bottle of methadone belonging to the mother within reach of the child. It was totally irresponsible.”
The court heard how the defendant had two other children who were not in the house at the time.
Mr Mike Graham, defending, said: “She has responded positively to child services and has made positive steps with her other children by engaging in activities with them.”
The 29-year-old admitted neglect of a minor and was given a 60-day sentence suspended for 12 months.
She was also ordered to attend a Proud Parent course.

We are not allowed to name the mum for legal reasons to protect the identity of the child.

Have your say
Just thank god the woman didn't smoke too! Can you imagine the uproar!!!! Being a druggie or an alcoholic is okay - apparently - but if she had smoked in front of the child then my god, it would have made world headlines!!
