Barrow MP says former chief nurse’s £36,000 pay is ’unacceptable’

THE mystery surrounding the whereabouts of a former health boss who is still being paid by the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust has been described as “unacceptable” by an MP.
John Woodcock, MP for Barrow and Furness, said the trust was paying out tens of thousands of pounds for what appeared to be little or no return.
October marks four months since UHMBT, which runs Furness General Hospital, announced its executive chief nurse was being seconded to another organisation.
The trust confirmed it would pay Jackie Holt’s £109,730 salary for 12 months while she worked at Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. But the Cheshire trust later backed out of the deal.
It is estimated UHMBT has now paid Mrs Holt more than £36,000, despite her having no known duties within any NHS organisation.
Health campaigners and union representatives have hit out over the lack of clarity, and what they perceive as wastefulness at a time when the cash-strapped trust is working to claw back £30m in savings by April 2014.
Darren McSweeney, who led the FGH Cancer Care Campaign against changes to the hospital’s oncology unit, said: “Given the financial challenges that UHMBT faces, the continuing saga of Jackie Holt is unacceptable.
“Replacements have now been brought in so the costs being incurred are an extra strain of the budgets of the trust.
“We need a resolution to this situation.”
Mr Woodcock, said: “The public deserve to know where our taxes are being spent and whether we get value for money.
“Senior posts attract salaries commensurate with the responsibility they carry, but many people will find it unacceptable that the trust is paying out tens of thousands of pounds for what appears to be little or no return.”
