Barrow MP assumes teaching role for summer school launch

THE first day of a summer school project has seen Barrow and Furness MP John Woodcock take to the role of teaching assistant.
The breakthrough project is aimed at improving numeracy and literacy skills for disadvantaged children and to make sure he could get fully involved, Mr Woodcock has become a Level 3 teaching assistant.
Yesterday Mr Woodcock put his skills to good use as he launched the Furness Summer Camp at Furness College.
The camp, which runs for three weeks during the summer holidays, is designed to build aspiration and improve skills for 50 Year 5 children. Programmes to improve physical activity and healthy eating are also built into the project.
John Woodcock said: “I am really pleased with the first day. We were all a bit nervous about how it was going to go, but the kids settled in really quickly, especially considering the fact that they don’t know each other that well yet.
“The kids have left with smiles on their faces and are looking forward to coming back tomorrow.”
The idea for the summer camp came about on the back of the Furness Poverty Commission report, published last April, which revealed that there were around 3,000 Furness children living below the breadline.
Former Barrow AFC legend Neil Doherty will be playing a leading role in promoting healthy lifestyles alongside retired headteacher Jill Byrne, who steered Newbarns Primary School to three consecutive outstanding Ofsted inspections.
Mr Woodcock said: “Only by breaking the cycle of under-achievement and low aspiration can we tackle child poverty in the long term.
“We are all responsible for how our children are learning.”
