Barrow model regatta proves to be a full-scale success

HOWLING winds and ferocious rain showers failed to deter brave boating enthusiasts from attending their annual summer regatta.
The event, held on the lake in Barrow Park on Sunday, saw around 20 people turn out to take part, in spite of the horrendous weather.
While many regulars were missing due to the conditions, those who braved the elements enjoyed a fun day out of competition and camaraderie.
David Jacques is treasurer of Furness Model Boat Club, which organises the annual summer event.
He said: “It’s what we call a full regatta with all different types of models. We had sailing yachts, we had scale models such as tugs and we had power boats, and there were various competitions for each one.
“The weather really was against us. It was terrible, especially with the wind. But we had around 15 boats which, considering the day and the fact that a lot of people are on holiday at this time of year, was very good. We managed to get through two or three sailing events and the timed events, despite it being very blustery.
“Taking everything into account, it went very well.”
The club, which has almost 50 members from all over South Cumbria as far as Kendal and Milnthorpe, will host its next event on Sunday September 7.
Due to feature submarine models, it is expected to be extremely popular and draw enthusiasts from all over the area.
