Barrow man grew cannabis in attic

A MAN caught growing cannabis in his attic after stealing two bags from gym-goers has been jailed for eight months.
A judge at Preston Crown Court told Westley McCormick that he had been warned last September that if he breached his suspended sentence for burglary he would be sent to prison.
The hearing yesterday was told how the 36-year-old, of Lindale Street, Barrow, was committed by magistrates for crown court sentencing after he admitted two offences of theft and another of being concerned in cannabis production in June.
Mr Jon Close, prosecuting, said one bag containing £230 worth of goods was stolen from the female changing rooms at The Park Leisure Centre, Barrow and another bag, containing £80 worth of property, from the male changing rooms.
McCormick was identified from CCTV footage.
Mr Close said that, when police arrested him and searched his home, they found seven cannabis plants being grown in his attic with artificial lighting and an extractor unit.
McCormick told officers he been given seeds and equipment and was growing for his own drug use.
He said when the thefts took place he had been short of money and drunk.
Mr David Traynor, defending, said McCormick had a long history of drug use.
He told the court: “The drugs issue has now largely been addressed and alcohol has taken its place. It is that demon the defendant now has to address to be free of offending
“He is genuinely remorseful for what happened. He is assessed as a low risk of re-offending.”
The barrister asked the judge to pass another suspended sentence as it was now 11 months since the last one was handed down.
He added that during that time McCormick had done supervision and drug rehabilitation.
But Judge Philip Sycamore said: “It would have been explained to you when the suspended sentence was imposed that if you offended during that order you could expect it to be activated in full or in part.”
