Barrow man attacked mum after Man United lost title

A MAN who “terrorised” his parents was ordered to pay £325 in compensation.
Kevin Young, of Sidney Street, Barrow, grabbed his mother by the jaw and hurled a boulder through her living room window following a row, Furness Magistrates’ Court heard on Tuesday. He had been drinking and watching the football on TV when he became enraged by the fact Manchester United failed to win the Premier League.
Sentencing, district judge Gerald Chalk told Young: “You in effect terrorised your parents. A lot of bridge building needs to be done by you.”
He added that Young’s mother was happy to have further contact with her son but did not want to see him when he had been drinking. At an earlier hearing the court was told the 29-year-old assaulted his mother before causing hundreds of pounds worth of damage to his parents’ home and car.
Mrs Lisa Hine, prosecuting, told Furness Magistrates’ Court on June 12 that Margaret Young told her son to calm down, at which point he became verbally abusive.
She asked him to leave and he responded by grabbing his mother by the jaw and forcing her head backwards.
He went upstairs before leaving and a short while later Mrs Young found a bedroom door had been kicked off its hinges.
By the time Young returned his father Samuel had come home and the front door had been locked.
Young began shouting and swearing, demanding to be let in. When he was refused entry, he ripped the wing mirror off the car and threw a boulder through the living room window, completely shattering it.
Young admitted assaulting his mother and two counts of criminal damage.
He was ordered to pay £100 to cover the insurance excess for the damage to his parents’ house, £75 for damage caused to the car and £150 compensation to Mrs Young for the assault.
He was also given a 12-month community order, requiring him to undergo alcohol treatment and complete 150 hours of unpaid work.
Holders United came second in the 2011/2 Premier League to neighbours Manchester City, who won the title on goal difference on the season’s last day.
