‘Barrow kids throwing food to get seagulls run over’

CHILDREN are throwing food in front of cars in a deliberate effort to get seagulls run over, a Barrow taxi driver claims.
The Evening Mail has also received reports of drivers running down geese crossing the road in Ormsgill.
The taxi driver, who asked not to be named, said she feared children throwing chips and bread in the path of her cab could cause an accident.
She said: “If they have a tray of chips, they purposefully throw it in the path of the oncoming taxis.
“It has happened to me about three times when I have had to brake suddenly. It’s definitely a deliberate effort.
“I don’t know why they do it. I know that no-one particularly likes seagulls, I don’t, but I don’t want to harm them.
“The children don’t care, they want to see them mown down. Maybe there is some kind of sadistic pleasure for them.”
Concerned bird lover Denise Clark, of Sedgefield Road, Barrow, also contacted the Evening Mail saying a family of geese had been hit by drivers near Barrow AFC’s Holker Street stadium.
The geese have become a familiar sight in the area near Lower Ormgsill Reservoir.
However, Miss Clark said she had missed the birds since a number were run down on the corner of Holker Street and Wilkie Road on Saturday, May 19.
Miss Clark said she wanted to make people aware of the fact the geese were often in the area.
She believed the driver who hit them could even have done so deliberately.
Miss Clark, who often feeds the birds near the Cocken Pond by the Travelodge Hotel, said there had been fewer geese in the area recently. She said: “(The geese) weren’t there yesterday and they haven’t been for the past 10 days, I haven’t seen them.
“It’s sad as they used to be there almost every day.
“People need to be aware families of geese are crossing.
“It is just awareness for people who are driving like lunatics.”

Ok so the number of seagulls are a problem, but we live in a seaside town! These kids want dealing with! Its a proven fact that children that take pleasure in hurting animals often move on to more sinster pastimes..Fact! Not just the seagulls, I often see kids trying to kick or stamp on the pigeons in town, with parents looking on! Also on Saturday morning my sister and I stopped outside Asda to let the Geese cross the road, we were angry as hell when some moron over took us and nearly ploughed right into the geese while laughing at us waiting patiently...They would not have been laughing if I had got my hands on them! The world is full of Sicko's!

Have your say
I remember one or two kids from 'school days' who would torture a cat or whatever they found. They grew up without empathy and compassion. Whats isnt 'unrelated' to this sordid behaviour is some of the local populations ideas of the herring gull as a pest. They are part of the natural world which we humans are doing a very good job of exterminating as we have been for a couple of hundred years. SEE THE BIGGER PICTURE !! The White Rhino is South Africa. The Tiger in India. The Gorilla central africa. In the UK we have 2% forested land the lowest in Europe. We need to learn to understand what we can do better to accomodate not exterminate ! We are culling (farmers / government policy ) Badgers in wales. And Barrow-ites see the beautful sea bird as the villain and pest. Time to change our attitudes and behaviours before the whole world is dead and grey (note what is happening to the Bee worldwide).
