Barrow gym owner lays down challenge to anyone to lift 100kg weight

BARROVIAN bodybuilders have been set a new challenge after Evolution Gym added two new 100kg dumbbells to its collection.

HEAVY LIFTING: Evolution Gym owner Keith Devlin with the 100kg weights

Gym owner Keith Devlin already offers a free life membership to anyone who can lift his 80kg dumbbells, but he is also challenging anyone to match him in lifting a huge 100kg with just one arm.

The 80kg weights were believed to be the heaviest in the area and introducing the 100kg dumbbells has already resulted in Mr Devlin attracting new gym members who are determined to complete the feat.

Mr Devlin, 60, who has previously appeared on BBC One show Bodybuilding Pensioners, was the first to complete the challenge.

He said: “If anyone takes the 80kg dumbbell out of the rack, lifts it and puts it back in with only one hand they get a free lifetime membership.”

Mr Devlin, whose commitment to fitness has led him to ignore warnings from doctors, following heart problems discovered while he had a cancer operation, started training aged 27.

He said: “They said maybe it’s time you stopped lifting heavy weights but I said there’s no chance because that’s my life.”

Singing the praises of gym fitness the weights fanatic added: “Most people don’t think I look my age. When you’re 18 or 19 and you get a bit of muscle mass it makes you look a bit older but when you get to a certain age, about 40, it keeps you looking young.”

Keith, of Ulverston, said people shouldn’t be intimated about joining the gym.

He said: “People are sometimes put off by the idea of going into a gym because they think it’s full of meatheads, but Evolution has a great atmosphere and everyone helps each other out.”

Gym members are required to sign a disclaimer before undertaking either of the mammoth lifts at Evolution, in Trinity Enterprise Centre, and Mr Devlin has issued an appeal to Barrow’s strongest.

“Get yourself down and don’t be put off by the size of it,” he said.

Have your say

BigArms and Steve Gardner, you both talk the talk but can you walk the walk? 123 people have tried and only 3 people have succeeded and one of those is Keith the owner and he is 61 years old!! So come on down and put up or shut up!

Coming from the strength and strongman community I know of DOZENS who could do the feat except, of course, they lives miles way. I've done as much as 140kg on a thicker handled dumbbell.
