Barrow father is fined £500 for Halloween motorbike chase

A DAD who chased his ex-wife and children on a motorbike as they made their way to a Halloween party has been given fines and costs totalling £700.

Edward James, from Barrow but said he now lives in Crete, was also placed under a restraining order for five years.

Barrow Crown Court heard on Friday how the defendant had split from his wife of 17 years in the summer of 2013 and they had two children who were aged 15 and 11 at the time.

Prosecutor Mr Andrew Brown said: “It was October 31 and his ex Sarah Gray was taking their two children and two of their friends aged 14 and 11 to a Halloween party which was about a 15 minute walk away.

“As they turned out of their street the defendant was on his motorbike in an archway. He went off down the road and then came back towards them as they made their way along Rawlinson Street.

“He pursued them and mounted the pavement and rode alongside them on the road. As they stood on a traffic island he went through a red light to cross by them.

“He mounted the pavement on three occasions throughout and was swearing and being threatening.

“At one point he rode directly towards them.”

His defence said that when he remarried and moved abroad problems had started. He had returned from Crete for a holiday and wanted to see his daughters.

Sentencing him, Judge Paul Batty said: “This was a most frightening incident for your two daughters. It must have been very frightening for them.

“You now live in Crete so a five years restraining order will not be an issue.”

He was fined £500 and £200 court costs and six penalty points were put on his driving licence.
